Does water damaged drywall have to be replaced?

Not always. A light stain on drywall that stayed firm can often be sealed with a stain blocking primer and painted. Drywall that is soft, swollen, crumbling or sagging has lost its strength, so that section is cut out and replaced with new drywall.

How do you know the wall is dry before patching?

The leak has to be repaired first, by a plumber or roofer if needed. Then the wall or ceiling needs time to dry out. Closing up a wet cavity traps moisture, so new drywall goes in only once the area is dry.

What if there is mold?

If you see mold or smell it, have it looked at by a mold remediation specialist before the wall is closed up. Drywall repair comes after that work is done.

What does a water damage repair include?

  • Cutting out the damaged drywall back to sound material
  • New drywall fastened to framing or backing
  • Taping and finishing the seams
  • Texture matched to the wall or ceiling
  • Primer so paint goes on evenly
